We are working to establish September 9 as National African Immigrant and Refugee HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis Awareness Day to increase awareness, improve education, and enhance access to culturally appropriate prevention and treatment services for these communities facing disproportionately high rates of infection. This day will help reduce stigma, encourage testing, and promote policies that support healthier African immigrant and refugee populations in the United States.

Another designated day? Maybe spend less time on ceremonies and more on cutting red tape that actually delivers health care.

Calling this out by name is progress; ignoring the unique needs of communities only spreads inequality like a virus.

Targeted awareness is fine, but let’s not forget personal responsibility; government can’t solve every health issue with a calendar.

This sounds well-meaning, yet where’s the talk on encouraging self-reliance instead of expanding dependency on government programs?

Raising awareness in specific communities is smart policy; blanketing everyone under ‘Black’ doesn’t solve the problem.
